Museum Aargau - 2016

Ears Open!

Under the theme ‚Ganz Ohr‘, the Museum Aargau takes its visitors on a sonic journey of discovery to six historical sites: the roman Legionary Path and Monastery in Königsfelden, Lenzburg Castle, Wildegg Castle, Hallwyl Castle and Habsburg Castle.

For the ‚Year of the Senses‘ 2016, we designed an overall concept on the topic of listening, and realised nine different sound installations for this purpose, each one adapted to the history and architecture of the respective site.

Apart from conveying historical content, we re-imagined some of the subject matter artistically, and designed others as playful interactions with sound. Thus, visitors of the Königsfelden Monastery's ancient cloister garden can recreate a nun's daily routine from hundreds of years ago by moving a clock pointer within a quadrophonic sound installation. Interactivity is the name of the game at Hallwyl Castle. In the ancient gaol, the visitor is encouraged to send his own words down the dark dungeon where, by way of ingenious live electronics, they get processed and are reflected in an outlandish fashion. The scope of the installations ranges from interactive works to scenic audio dramas and site-specific musique concrète pieces. We utilized generative audio techniques, haptic feedback as well as our AROS approach. We also managed to win over German sound artist Andreas Oldörp to contribute a sound installation for the Königsfelden Monastery.
