Chronicles

The Idee und Klang Studio has been existing for 25 years now. It started in a small flat and has become an established place of sound in Switzerland with international radiance!

1996

Human Bomb —the first time

Human Bomb was the first record that Daniel, at that time barely 17 years old, had mixed with his former business partner Willy Honegger. The songs were all written by the famous English musician and composer Neil Filby (Karls Kühne Gassenschau).

Studies

1996 - 2001 Daniel studied Audio Design at the University of Music, Basel. He was often seen in the electronic studio of the academy and mixed many productions on the time-honoured Studer 990 console.

2001

Skamander — to the diploma

For his master's degree, Daniel realized a monumental musical project together with the composer Beat Gysin. The Show was performed in a swimming pool. More than 64 loudspeakers were installed, of course also some under water.

The first Studio

From 1998 Daniel continuously developed the largest room of his former apartment into the Idee&Klang Studio Riehen. Already back then big productions, e.g. Trauer (Herbert Grönemeyer), the film music for Gripsholm or David Klein's "My Marylin" were mixed at that place.

My Marilyn — a passionate project with the David Klein Quintet

Our first big jazz production under the direction of producer and saxophonist David Klein. Famous musicians like Mulgrew Miller (Dianne Reeves and Cassandra Wilson), Ira Coleman (Herbie Hancock), Marcello Pellitteri played. Singing: Miriam Klein (Dexter Gordon). Only the best was good enough for the mix, so Klein booked a world-class international studio with one of the world's most renowned sound engineers. Back in Basel, Klein wondered if it couldn't be mixed even better. He heard indirectly from Daniel Dettwiler, a young sound engineer at the time, who had just finished his studies and set up a small recording studio in Riehen. Daniel mixed the project from scratch again, everything 'in the box' (except for the reverberation) and this at a time when practically every sound engineer considered it impossible to create a great mix without using a mixing console. The production is still a reference today. more...

Gripsholm — hello Soundtrack

The soundtrack to Oscar winner Xavier Koller's "Gripsholm" was written by the composers David Klein and Olivier Truan and initially mixed by a well-known sound engineer. During the final mix in Munich the composers realized that the sound was not big enough, not beautiful enough to meet their needs. Perfectionists that they were, they had the music mixed again - and since David had good experiences with Daniel during the mixing for "My Marilyn", the Job was given to Daniel to mix his first film music, and he nailed it.. more...

2002

Herbert Grönemeyer and the Abbey Road Studio 1!

The World Quintet (today Kolsimcha) feat. Herbert Grönemeyer was our first large-scale production. The band recordings took place at an old radio studio in Zurich, Switzerland and at GUM Studio, Belgium. The London Mozart Players were recorded at Abbey Road Studio 1, London and Herbert Grönemeyer was tracked at the Hardstudios in Winterthur. Mixing was still done at the old Idee und Klang Studio in Riehen (for several weeks:-). Herbert sang the song, composed by David Klein, with fervor and we are still proud of this work today  more...

BMW Museum — a sound space spectacle

During this period of time Daniel and Ramon De Marco founded Idee und Klang Audiodesign gmbh. Our first big assignment was to create soundinstallations and room-sound compositions for all areas of the new BMW Museum. Ramon and Daniel spent many months composing for this.
Afterwards the Idee und Klang Studio realized the premix on a 16 channel AROS 2 system. The final mix took place directly in the rooms of the museum, there on a 64 channel Aros 3 on over 500 loudspeakers. We were on site for over two months.

2005

Die weisse Massai — a stunning soundtrack

We moved into our current rooms in the Gundeldinger Feld together with the famous film music composer Niki Reiser. From then on, Niki realised literally all of his music with Daniel. The first project was a really big one: "The White Massai". We recorded the orchestra at Teldex Studio, Berlin. Various individual musicians were then recorded in the new rooms of our studio. But the most fun was the work in Kenya. We were looking for local musicians in the bush, which we recorded with mobile studio equipment and melt together with the orchestra back at the studio.  more...

Selma — Recording Xavier Naidoo, Sarah Connor u.a.

For the Selma Project, a variety of German pop stars sang songs composed by David Klein, Olivier Truan and Michael Heizler to texts by the lyricist Selma Meerbaum-Eisinger, who died in the German concentrations camps Michailowska at the age of 18. Most of the singers were recorded at Teldex Studio's Berlin. David Klein was the producer. more...

Thomas D our guest!

The main track of the album "Kennzeichen D" was composed and produced by David Klein. Our employee at that time Hannes Kumke did the vocal recordings in the Idee und Klang Studio. Thomas was deeply impressed by the incredible collection of historical microphones from which he could choose the right one for his voice. The old Telefunken Ela/M 301 from 1928 was used, the oldest microphone from the collection. more...

The Colours of Cremona Violins

A long collaboration begins with the producer Walter Fischli. The first project was a recording with four violins from the golden era. How do you record a Stradivari, a Berngonzi, a Guarneri (figlio d'Andrea) and a Guarneri del Gesù in such a way that you can hear the differences in sound at their best? A task perfectly suited for Daniel.  more...

Daniel as performer

For Marienglas - a room-acoustic chamber opera by Beat Gysin, Daniel Dettwiler realized the audio design and performed the sound spaces live. The people enjoyed the concert lying down and wore sophisticated headphones by „Stax". An additional acousmatic sound system provided further sound environments. The project was performed in Basel, Bern and Valais (2010), in Zurich (winter 2011) and later in Latvia. Marienglas  Beat Gysin  live  press

180° — a touch of life

SRF2 — composing for Swiss Radio again

For the national radio SRF2, Daniel Dettwiler, together with Ramon De Marco, composed the entire acoustic layout including the news signet. Rendez-Vous? — Yes!

In 2013 Idee und Klang Audiodesign Gmbh won the competition for the redesign of the sound logo for the " Rendez-vous" news magazine. The winning composition proposal for the news opener was written by Daniel Dettwiler. The programme is broadcasted on many radio stations. In order to set new standards in terms of quality for a swiss radio jingle, a complete orchestra was engaged, which had been recorded at the Volkshaus Studio Basel with Daniel’s historical microphones. Due to this enormous effort for "about 10 seconds of music", as the Basel Landschaftliche Zeitung titled it, Swiss Television realised an interesting contribution to the creation process. See the Swiss TV show about the composition more…
