inside/outside - 3D Soundscape Installation - 2023

Biennale di Musica, Venice | Italy

The sound cube acts as a gate for an extraordinary journey into another dimension of the city through a listening experience to question and reflect on how we treat this environment. The installation contributes to a sensitisation of how we interact with the fragile habitat of the venetian lagoon and fosters appreciation for its beauty and diversity by examining and experiencing the influence of anthropogenic noise pollution in a new way. The installation allows visitors to hear sounds of the city and its surroundings that are normally unheard, including sounds off the beaten tracks, at night, or on abandoned islands. Feld recordings done with a special 3d microphone setup are carefully and musically interweaved together to compose a journey that simultaneously combines and contrasts different auditory perspectives of the city and the surrounding lagoons. At the same time, the installation also reveals unconventional sounds such as infra/ultrasound, electromagnetic waves and hidden sounds, such as sounds underneath the city and underwater.

The installation can be heard as a Dolby Atmos Music mix on Apple Music or Amazon Music. A music album in stereo based on the same material was released on the venetian label Galaverna.
