Claude Lanzmann. The Recordings – Sound Scenography – 2025
Jewish Museum | Berlin, Germany
This exhibition is dedicated to the sound archive of filmmaker Claude Lanzmann. At its center are conversations that bear witness to remembering, speaking, and remaining silent about the Shoah. For the first time, the previously unpublished audio recordings that Lanzmann made during his Holocaust research are made accessible as an independent auditive experience. Visitors encounter the voices, pauses, and atmospheres that formed the core of his work.
What makes this exhibition unique is that the sound content becomes interactively perceptible in the space thanks to a precise tracking system. The IAGS system, which was already used in the Sprachenland exhibition at the State Museum (2023), is utilized here once again. With its accurate position tracking and a binaural sound engine, it allows visitors to interact with the space and the exhibits in real time—much like in a computer game.
The exhibition opens a space for listening—a soundscape in which history, testimony, and cinematic research intertwine.
The sound scenography was conceived and realized by Idee und Klang Audio Design.
